Nepahwin Residence
A nail-laminated timber balcony, solarium tea room and garage workshop added to a lakeside home over a phased, owner-built schedule.
Before retiring, the owners wanted to replace a failing balcony, turn the garage into a workshop and add a solarium to the main floor. The solarium doubles as a tea room for formal ceremonies, a custom from their years in Japan.
The owners wanted to help build it, so we planned for a longer, low-pressure schedule and materials they could move and install in stages. Wood from the old deck became a backyard fence, detailed around the weaknesses of the older timber.
The new balcony is nail-laminated timber (NLT), which gives a solid finished underside instead of open joists. The NLT posts continue up to frame the solarium, which carries a private roof deck. In the workshop, a translucent aerogel-insulated door replaces the garage door and lets in daylight all year.
