Volcano Museum

A competition entry with a compression-ring roof and turf-bearing panels, inspired by Iceland's turf houses.

Reykjahlíð, Iceland Competition entry 2019
Rendering of a low turf-covered building in a grassy volcanic landscape

Our entry to Buildner's 2019 Iceland Volcano Museum competition, for an information centre and exhibition space near the Hverfjall volcano.

A compression-ring roof supports leaning, turf-covered panels anchored by stone at their base, recalling Iceland's traditional turf houses. Inside, a geothermally heated central space gives year-round shelter, and its concave form spreads daylight through the open interior.
